Cycling Deaths on Zürich Roads Fall to Zero for First Time in a Decade

City safety figures for the first quarter of 2026 show no cycling fatalities — a milestone attributed to the rapid expansion of protected bike lanes since 2023.

The city of Zürich recorded zero cycling fatalities in the first quarter of 2026, the first time this has occurred in any quarter since records began in 2015. The figures were published by Stadtpolizei Zürich this week and credited in large part to the 47km of new protected cycling infrastructure installed between 2023 and 2025. Serious injuries also fell by 34% year-on-year.

City councillor Filippo Leutenegger called the results "proof that investment in safe infrastructure saves lives." Cycling advocacy group Pro Velo Zürich welcomed the news but cautioned that a single quarter does not constitute a trend, urging the city to press ahead with the remaining 60km of planned cycle routes still awaiting construction.
