Winterthur will elect its new Stadtpräsident on 10 May, with the race between FDP candidate Stefan Fritschi and SP candidate Kaspar Bopp too tight for analysts to call. The contest follows the recent city elections in which the left extended its majority on the Stadtrat, with the Greens now holding three of nine executive seats.

The FDP has opted not to field incumbent Michael Baumer in the runoff, throwing its full weight behind Fritschi. Whoever wins will inherit a city grappling with a housing crisis, a major Hauptbahnhof redevelopment plan, and a public debate over urban pigeon management that has unexpectedly dominated recent weeks.
