University of Zürich Launches Free German Language Programme for International Residents
A new initiative backed by the canton aims to reduce language barriers for the city's large expat community, with evening and weekend classes starting in September.
The University of Zürich has announced a free German language programme for international residents of the canton, launching in September 2026 with an initial capacity of 500 participants. The programme, funded by a CHF 2.3 million cantonal grant, will offer A1 to B2 level courses in evening and weekend formats, designed around the schedules of working adults.
Priority will be given to residents who have lived in the canton for less than three years. Registration opens on 1 June via the university's continuing education portal. Canton education director Silvia Steiner said the initiative recognised that language integration was "the single biggest factor in long-term social and professional inclusion" for newcomers to Zürich.
